Ally (“Queeny_Diva”) had only been on the site for two months, and Shawn for four, when he decided to make his move. “Shawn flirted with me, we exchanged numbers, went out on our first date within a week and a half, and the rest is history,” Ally says. “That was nine and a half years ago.”

What she doesn’t mention right away is that it almost didn’t happen at all. “Nothing,” Ally laughs when asked what drew her to his profile. “I intentionally skipped his profile every time I saw him.” As it turns out, Shawn wasn’t so different. He later admitted to her that he’d done the same thing, scrolling right past her page more than once — until he’d narrowed the field down to just a handful of profiles, and hers was still there. “I was the best looking,” Ally says, recounting his confession with a laugh.

Their first date took them to Blue Moon, and it was there that both of them quietly reconsidered their first impressions. “He should’ve used different pics,” Ally says. “He was so handsome in person.” Shawn was just as taken. “She’s actually really pretty,” he remembers thinking.

For Ally, the date brought a feeling she wasn’t expecting so soon. “It felt like we had known each other forever,” she says.

Their timing wasn’t simple. Shawn was in the middle of a divorce, and Ally was a single mom raising a two-year-old. Neither of those circumstances made the start of a new relationship easy, but neither one of them let it stop things either.

The proposal came on an evening walk. “One night we went on a walk on the backside of Blue Moon, on the water,” Ally recalls. “We were walking up the stairs to go back in, and when I turned around, he was on one knee.”

Looking back, Ally says finding Shawn changed something fundamental for both of them. “It’s made us both whole for the first time,” she says.

Her advice for other online daters is simple. “Don’t give up. It’s possible,” she says. “Also, don’t compromise on who you are.” Shawn’s advice echoes that same idea. “Be yourself,” he says. “When you find ‘the one,’ you won’t have to change anything. They will love you for you.”

Nine and a half years later, that walk on the water is still the moment they both come back to — proof that sometimes the person you keep scrolling past is the one you end up spending your life with.
