Bridging the Distance, One Call at a Time

Simone ("simpow") had been an on-and-off member of the site for more than two years; David ("DJmaz") had been coming and going for four. Their timelines finally lined up on July 24th, a little after 10 p.m., when David sent Simone a flirt. She flirted back.

He followed it with a question that could easily have gone nowhere. "Hi, I have never seen you on this site before, how long have you been here?" he asked. Simone almost let it pass. "I felt not to respond," she admits, "but being off that day and home alone and bored, I said to myself, let me just respond politely."

That polite reply turned into a conversation, and the conversation turned into something more. What drew Simone in wasn't one line in David's profile so much as what she values generally — she calls herself "big on communication" and someone who "loves to see people laugh." David, for his part, is a self-described romantic, and that's the spirit he brought to the early messages.

When it came time to meet, David picked Simone up at a Walmart, and the two headed to IHOP for their first date. Walking in, both of them were nervous in their own way. "God, let this work — I believe he is the one," Simone remembers thinking. David's nerves ran along similar lines: "I hope she will like me, as I'm super nervous."

Whatever they expected, the date didn't go quite the way either had pictured. Simone was surprised by her own calm. "I was not nervous at all," she says. David surprised her right back — he kissed her hello before either of them had really said much of anything.

From there, distance became the real test. "The distance" is what both of them point to when asked about the hardest part of becoming a couple. But it was in the phone calls that filled that distance where each of them realized what they had. Simone remembers a quiet night at home: "I was at home, we were on the call." David remembers it from his side, fitting Simone in wherever he could: "I called on every break I got."

Neither is shy about what finding each other has meant. "It changed my life for the better," Simone says. David doesn't hesitate either: "It's everything I ever wanted."

For other online daters hoping for the same, Simone's advice leans on patience and openness. "Be patient, be yourself, open to understanding others' culture, and not wanting people to be like you," she says. "Instead, allow others to be themselves." David's advice is more practical, drawn straight from his own experience. "Never just go with pictures or what's placed on your profile," he says. "Try to make it to your first date as soon as possible, because seeing someone in person is way different than pictures and phone conversations."

Simone and David are still building their story, one phone call and one visit at a time — proof that sometimes the best replies are the ones you almost didn't send.
